ZenithCraft Tools has published a procurement-focused technical guide comparing the two most common high-speed steel (HSS) grades used in bi-metal hole saws: M3:2 and M42. Written for importers, private-label brands, distributors and technical buyers, it answers what the two grades are, what hardness data really means, and when the M42 premium is justified.
A bi-metal hole saw joins a narrow high-speed-steel tooth edge to a tougher, flexible alloy-steel body; the grade name applies to the cutting edge, not the complete cup. M3:2 is a non-cobalt, high-vanadium HSS offering a strong balance of attainable hardness, abrasive wear resistance and cost for general-purpose saws. M42 is a cobalt-bearing HSS with much more molybdenum, chosen when the tooth edge must retain hardness during heat-generating cuts, especially in stainless and harder alloys. Key nominal compositions: carbon 1.20% vs 1.08%, molybdenum 5.0% vs 9.4%, tungsten 6.2% vs 1.5%, cobalt — vs 8.0%, vanadium 3.0% vs 1.2%.
High-speed-steel hardness depends on austenitising temperature, quench, tempering and test location. The Erasteel curves for both grades span overlapping room-temperature HRC values, so a quotation that says only "M42, 69 HRC" does not prove superior cutting life. A buyer-ready hardness record should include the steel grade and heat/lot number, test method and scale, calibration status, exact measurement location, and sample count with mean and range.
Room-temperature hardness differs from hot hardness. M42's cobalt content mainly improves hardness retention while the cut generates heat. A dry, slow, rubbing cut can still destroy an M42 tooth edge; correct speed, positive feed and chip evacuation remain necessary.

The guide proposes a controlled protocol: 38 mm diameter, 4/6 TPI variable-pitch saws with identical cup geometry, weld process and finish; verified M3:2 and M42 lots with chemistry certificates; a minimum of n = 3 finished saws per grade with randomized cutting order; AISI 304 stainless sheet (2.0 mm) and low-carbon steel sheet (3.0 mm) workpieces; a rigid drill press with the same arbor and a new pilot drill for each grade set; 5% water-miscible cutting fluid applied continuously; and pre-declared endpoints such as inability to complete a hole within 2× the mean of the first five cycles, visible tooth-strip failure or weld separation.
Report every specimen, not only the best saw: for each grade show n, individual hole counts, median, range and failure mode. Cost per accepted hole, including downtime and tool-change assumptions, is the correct ranking metric rather than purchase price alone.
M42 is not automatically the better hole saw. At room temperature, the hardness ranges of well-processed M3:2 and M42 can overlap. M42's main advantage is hot-hardness retention from its approximately 8% cobalt content. Tooth geometry, weld integrity, runout and operating conditions can outweigh the steel label. Compare cost per accepted hole, not grade price alone.
